When a girl reaches the age of 12 and lives in poverty her life is out of her control. She faces the reality of being married by the age of 14. Pregnant by the time she's 15. And, if she survives childbirth, she might have to sell her body to support her family. Which puts her at risk for contracting and spreading HIV. That is definitely not the life one imagines for a 12 year old, is it?
BUT GOOD NEWS! THERE IS A SOLUTION! AND YOU CAN HELP!
My cousin Juan showed me a very important and incredible cause called "The Girl Effect." This is a movement about leveraging the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves, their families, their communities, their countries and the world. It's about making girls visible and changing their social and economic dynamics by providing them with specific, powerful and relevant resources.
When we include girls in education, health and economic investment we have a better chance of preventing issues such as child marriage, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and breaking the inter-generational cycle of poverty. But girls can't do it alone; they need the world to listen to them and invest in their potential.
Hundreds of organizations and thousands of people are starting to join this cause and YOU should too. Head over to their website http://www.girleffect.org and see what you can do to help. Spread the word, tell your friends, parents, classmates.. anyone! Also, like them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/girleffect and follow them on twitter: https://twitter.com/girleffect to follow up with their latest updates.
Like Mark Lowcock once said: "If you change the prospects of an adolescent girl on a big enough scale, you will transform societies."
I'm extremely grateful that my cousin Juan showed me this wonderful organization and I am glad I can now share it with you guys!
This is just the start. Join the movement. Always remember that together we can change the world and leave it better than the way we found it.
Thank you and God bless you all.
